DVD Series #2 - THE WOODCARVER’S COMPASS • UNDERSTANDING GRAIN DIRECTION
Understanding the grain of the wood is important for carving because the woodcarver is constantly addressing the grain in the wood from different angles. As a reference, the grain direction for carving wood changes as much as the minute hand changes on your wall clock. In woodcarving the grain is like a dance partner, hence you always need to be sensitive to your approach and carve accordingly. Here is a unique exercise I call the grain wheel that familiarizes you with all aspects of dealing with the grain. SCULPTURE WOODCARVING SET
This twenty-four piece fishtail wood carving set is good for the economical beginner student. Generally the fishtail design is the best for woodcarving because the tool steel is always behind the carving edge as you move through the wood. In addition, I also look for the tool steel quality and temper of the carving tool. The tool steel in these tools is pretty good and they hold the edge. The set includes twenty carving tools, one brass mallet, two water slipstones (1000 and 4000) and a tool roll. An assortment of carving tools can be purchased individually as well. Burnishing brush not included.

1.5 lbs. Calvo Brass Mallet
Here is the Calvo Brass Mallet. This mallet gives a positive force forward in woodcarving known as a dead blow with no bounce. Used by my Italian and German teachers, it fits in your hand very nicely and is compact. Nothing on the market compares to the control that you get from this tool. Mallets are just as important as good chisels so this is an essential part of the arsenal for the beginner and intermediate carver.
